What Is a CMS and the Benefits of Having One on Your Site

What is a CMS?

CMS stands for content management system. A CMS collection is like a folder that contains many individual pages of a similar type. For example, a 'Blog' could be a collection of articles or you could have a collection for various 'Locations'.

What makes each collection different is the type of content the collection includes as well as how it will be displayed. Each collection can include an unlimited quantity of pages (well, a NiceJob CMS allows for up to 10,000 pages- but that’s a heck of a lot!).

When should you use a CMS Collection?

The best use case for a CMS collection is for content marketing pages. If any of these apply to you, consider adding one to your Convert website:

  • You would like to start a blog
  • You service many different locations and would like to have location pages on your website.
  • You work with an SEO company that regularly produces content for you

Benefits of adding a CMS to your website

Adding a blog to your website can be a great way to boost your search engine rankings.

Blogging is good for positioning your website higher in google searches as it helps with a number of things that are important ranking factors. When you have a blog that’s updated regularly (we’re talking at least once a week) with high quality blog posts that discuss topics relevant to your audience, it can make a huge difference to how your overall website performs in the search engines.

Here are some ways a CMS, like a blog, can improve your website ranking:

1. A content management system keeps your website fresh and current

Google doesn’t want to deliver its searchers outdated information. Websites that are regularly updated signal to Google that the website is offering fresh content. It’s not necessarily good for business to constantly update your homepage, so a blog is a practical tool for adding new content to your website on a regular basis.

2. A CMS keeps people on your website longer

Google values and pays attention to the length of time of visitor spends on your site. This is referred to as dwell time. Essentially, if a person stays longer on a page after clicking a link, Google will view that link as more valuable than if someone bounces off straight away. If you are sharing valuable content through your blog, there's a good chance your website visitor will stick around longer to read the material - and that's a good thing!

3. A CMS can help target long-tail keywords

While it may be hard to rank for broad, competitive keywords such as “landscaping”, blogging can help you rank for long-tail keywords. These are more specific keywords people are searching for that are relevant to your business.

An example of a long-tail keyword might be “landscaping tips for small gardens” or “landscaping ideas for patio area”. These searches don’t attract as much traffic as “landscaping” does, but they come from people in your target audience and you’ll get more traffic from these topics than you would on page five or ten for broader terms.

4. A content management system on your Convert Website provides unlimited pages for content creation

Aside from a blog, A CMS collection can also give you or the agency you are working with the freedom to create as many pages as you want on your convert website. We’ll design a template for you which you can use to create an unlimited number of pages. It’s the perfect option if you have content that follows a similar layout and you need to create many versions of them, for example location pages.

For instance, one of our top performing clients wanted to add many different location pages to his website. To accomplish this, NiceJob built a CMS that the client can easily add content to for their different locations.

What’s the difference between a CMS collection and a Landing page?

CMS collections are useful if your content follows a similar layout and you need to create many versions of them, for example five or more location pages or a blog. They are also beneficial if you would like a third party agency to create content for you

If your primary goal is lead generation for a particular service or location and you are after a more targeted and tailored page focused on conversion, you may want to consider a landing page for best results.
